Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China
Grade 904L:
- Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. The inclusion of copper significantly enhances its resistance to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid. Furthermore, it provides robust protection against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
- This grade boasts outstanding formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic under all conditions. Thanks to its austenitic structure, it also exhibits exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
- 904L stainless steel features significant quantities of nickel and molybdenum, both of which are highly expensive. Recently, Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) has begun to replace 904L in many applications, offering similar performance at a reduced cost. Consequently, 904L's usage has decreased compared to past years.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Originally developed for sulfuric acid resistance, 904L stainless steel boasts exceptional durability in various conditions. The material withstands warm seawater and high chloride environments, evidenced by a PRE of 35. Its high nickel content significantly enhances its resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to typical austenitic grades. Copper additives provide improved resistance to sulfuric and other reducing acids, especially in highly aggressive 'mid concentration' ranges.
- In terms of corrosion performance, 904L ranks between standard austenitic grade 316L and highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades containing 6% molybdenum.
- 904L offers superior resistance compared to molybdenum-free grades such as 304L and 310L.
- For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in challenging environments, the steel should undergo solution treatment after cold working.
Heat Resistance:
- 904L stainless steel exhibits strong oxidation resistance. However, similar to other highly alloyed grades, it becomes structurally unstable at elevated temperatures due to the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. It is not recommended for use above 550°C. According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the design stress values for 904L are set at 371°C.
Heat Treatment:
- Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. This grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.
Welding:
- 904L stainless steel can be welded using all standard methods. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is susceptible to heat cracking in constrained weldments, so care is necessary. Pre-heating should be avoided, and post-weld heat treatment is usually unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for 904L welding.
Fabrication:
- As a high purity, low sulfur grade, 904L does not machine as easily as other grades optimized for machinability. Nevertheless, it can be machined using conventional methods. Achieving a small radius of bend is straightforward, typically done cold. Although not usually required, annealing should be considered if the fabrication will face severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
Typical Applications:
- 904L stainless steel is ideal for applications including sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acid processing plants, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plant components, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery parts, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.
Specified Properties:
- As per ASTM A240M, flat rolled products (plates, sheets, and coils) must meet specific criteria. Similar, though not identical, specifications are available for other products like pipes, tubes, and bars.
904L Stainless Steel Sheets in a Variety of Finishes
Our stainless steel sheets are available in a range of exquisite finishes: brushed finish, 2B smooth finish, or 8K mirror finish.
Each stainless steel sheet we provide has a protective film on the finished side, easily removable after fabrication or installation. This film shields the material's surface from wear and marks. The reverse side remains unfinished.
